WHAT ABOUT PREVIOUSLY PAINTED MASONRY?
Yes, mineral silicate paints can be applied over previously painted surfaces with latex or acrylic paints, as long as those paints are in good condition and well adhered. Before applying mineral paint, all loose, flaking, or peeling paint should be removed, and the surface should be sanded smooth.
While mineral paint will protect the existing paint from further weathering, it cannot enhance the vapor permeability of the latex paint beneath. If there is significant peeling, it is advisable to completely remove the existing paint before repainting, as the peeling is likely to continue.
If the existing paint is in good condition and well adhered, applying mineral paint will encapsulate the latex or acrylic paint, essentially “freezing” it in time. The new mineral paint will repel wind-driven rain and block UV rays, preventing further deterioration of the existing paint. Mineral paints adhere to the surface of the existing latex or acrylic paint, and the nano-particle sol silicate binder will penetrate the old paint and bond with the masonry underneath.

Mineral paints consist of a binder (the adhesive that holds the paint together and adheres it to the surface), mineral pigments, and a small amount of water. In this case, the potassium silicate binder is combined with naturally occurring mineral pigments, ground from precious minerals and gemstones, to create the longest-lasting paint possible. The potassium silicate binder is also unaffected by UV radiation or weather, making these paints stable and durable in harsh conditions. We use only earthen mineral pigments, avoiding synthetic colorants, to ensure your colors endure over time. Natural mineral oxide pigments are completely stable and inert, unaffected by U.V. rays under any environmental conditions. Additionally, the mineral surface does not develop a static charge like ordinary paints, preventing airborne dirt from sticking to it.
